How this works
For sales from 23 July 2024, on listed equity shares and equity-oriented mutual funds where STT was paid:
- Short term (held 12 months or less): 20% of the gain.
- Long term (held more than 12 months): 12.5% of the year's long-term gains above ₹1.25 lakh.
- Bought before 1 Feb 2018: the cost is the higher of what you paid and the lower of the 31 Jan 2018 value and the sale price ("grandfathering").
- Losses: a net short-term loss reduces long-term gains; a net long-term loss only reduces long-term gains, so what is left is shown as carried forward.
The tax shown is before surcharge and the 4% health and education cess, and it ignores your other income. Residents whose other income is below the basic exemption limit can use the unused part against these gains; this calculator does not. For your own case, ask a chartered accountant.
