How this works
FIRE number = yearly spending in retirement ÷ withdrawal rate. At 4%, that is 25 times your yearly spending. Lean and fat presets multiply your spending by 0.7 and 1.5.
Coast FIRE number = FIRE number ÷ (1 + real return)years to retirement. If your investments today are at least this much, they could grow to your FIRE number by your target age without new money, if the return assumption holds.
Years to FIRE projects today's investments plus your monthly contribution, compounded monthly at the real return, until they reach the FIRE number (capped at 100 years).
Everything is in today's money: the return is real (after inflation). Returns are not guaranteed, and a 4% withdrawal rate is a rule of thumb from historical US data; 3–3.5% is more cautious. Taxes and fees are not included.
