Do I have to file a German tax return?

Most employees in Germany only have to file a tax return for certain reasons: a second job, some tax class combinations, income without wage tax, and a few more. Answer the questions for the tax year 2026 to see which of these reasons your answers point to, with the rule and its source for each.

Your inputs are used only to calculate this result and are not stored. How we handle data

Preview: a Steuerberater hasn't confirmed our reading of these rules yet, so the check names the reasons and their sources without any limits or amounts. It never says for certain that you have to file. It doesn't ask for amounts while the limits in the rules are in review: an amount would change nothing you see here.

Tax year 2026

The questions are about the calendar year 2026, the year a return filed in 2027 covers.

Where did you live in 2026?
Did you have a job in Germany with wage tax (Lohnsteuer) taken from your salary?
Were you married or in a registered partnership in 2026?

Hear when the check is reviewed

We'll email you once a Steuerberater has reviewed these rules and the check can say more, and occasionally about money across countries. Your answers are not sent with it.

How this works

The check runs on inWst's rules engine: each filing reason is stored as data with its source in the Einkommensteuergesetz (§ 46 EStG and the rules it refers to), the tax year and whether it has been reviewed.

Where a reason depends on a limit, such as the amount of other income that triggers a return, the limit is part of a rule we haven't confirmed yet. Until a Steuerberater reviews it, the check lists the reason as a point to check and shows no limit.

Your answers are sent once, to work out this result. They are not stored and not logged.
